Bad writing: a side effect of depression?

Check out this comment I received after posting Is depression the new celebrity trend?

I loved as much as you’ll receive carried out right here. The sketch is tasteful, your authored subject matter stylish. nonetheless, you command get bought an impatience over that you wish be delivering the following. unwell unquestionably come more formerly again since exactly the same nearly very often inside case you shield this hike.

Is bad writing a side effect of depression? If yes, then this spambot has a serious case of the blahs.

But what about us humans?

Are we better writers when we’re sad and blue? Do we find inspiration through angst? Does negativity turn our crank?  Or do we produce our best work when we’re happy and we know it?

Cop a squat on the couch, people, and talk to me.

    • Makes total sense. (Come on, people. I had to say that. He’s the King of the Friday Drabble. You don’t want him mad at you… he might write a drabble about YOU!)

  1. “All of the above” for me. I write good happy stuff when I’m happy and good sad stuff when I’m sad. If I had to try to write something happy while I’m sad or vice versa, that probably wouldn’t work out so well.
I’ve also come up with some pretty clever stuff while blitzed on wine and/or painkillers (had a couple surgeries this year) not that I’d recommend that method to anyone.

    • You should try writing the opposite to how you’re feeling. It might surprise you. :-)

Writing when under the influence…always an experience. You think you’re writing the best shit EVER and after you post it, you still think it’s the best shit EVER. It’s a winning combo. :-)

  2. I write best when I’m happy, because I feel inspired to write good stuff. When I’m sad, I don’t even have the energy to come up with something good. It’s just a bunch of typos and nonsensical phrases. Given the fact that 99.9% of the time, I’m a happy person, I am able to write good stuff most of the time, just because I feel energised to do so.

  3. Wow! That comment in your post was a big ole case of spam gobbledygook. I don’t think bad writing necessarily indicates depression, but could be a symptom. Of course, there were some mighty infamously depressed good writers, so there may be absolutely no correlation. I don’t know what I’m saying. Just forget I was here. Great. Now I’m depressed.

  4. I ought to say, youve got 1 of the greatest blogs Ive seen in a lengthy time. What I wouldnt give to have the ability to make a weblog thats as interesting as this. I guess Ill just have to maintain reading yours and hope that 1 day I can write on a subject with as considerably understanding as youve got on this one!
