12 reasons why you should join this writing challenge

Author’s Note: BlogFestivus is a short-story writing challenge that I hosted in December 2011. It will be back again this winter but if you want to read what it’s all about…keep reading. Each story is linked at the bottom of this post.

I’ll keep this simple. I’ll also keep it brief. Perhaps short would be a better choice of word.

Back in June, I introduced BlogShorts: 30 short stories, 30 days, 30 words. It was an extremely tight challenge and it sure got your knickers in a twist. Everyone who participated did a great job and very few went commando. (You know who you are.)

I promised to return with another version of this short story challenge later in the year. Well, it’s now later and you’ve waited patiently so…

Hop on the seasonal joy train and sign up. If that’s not reason enough, here’s 12 more “why this is a good idea” reasons:

1. It’s a short challenge. Just 12 stories over 12 days. You’ll be done well before the insanity of the holiday season consumes your every waking moment.

2. You don’t need to come up with a lot of words. Only 144 to be exact (12 x 12 = 144) for each story.

3. For those of you participating in WordPress’ PostaDay2011, you’ll be doing like a two-for-one, which means…DOUBLE CREDITS!

4. I offer up the theme so you don’t have to make your brain go boom. You’ll be writing to “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” One item from the song each day. For those of you who are Christmas-challenged, think of this as a list of really strange things you found in a drawer somewhere. Before you ask, you don’t have to include the my true love sent to me part or the drumming, piping, leaping, dancing, milking, swimming, or laying parts, either. Unless you really want to and then, hey, it’s your story.

5. You don’t have to set up a daily reminder or a prompt. I’ll be on Twitter every morning. Or rather, my stand-in, Ashton, will be. *snicker*

6. Video or audio posts count. We all want to hear your voice crack when you try to hit the high note in five golden rings.

7.  You get to use the awesome artwork I designed just for this challenge. Really. No, really, I insist.

8. Once you sign up for the challenge, you can start writing so you got ‘em in the can ready to go. Seriously. I mean, what am I going to do… snitch to your Mother? I use the word “challenge” here in its loosest interpretation.

9. Your blog or website will become part of the permanent collection here on Blogdramedy. That’s worth like…a Teen Burger at A&W (plus $1 off coupon.)

10. The writer who, over the course of the challenge, makes me laugh the hardest, will get a gold-plated invitation to guest blog on Blogdramedy. (Word is…on the street? You could trade this for an empty Double Bubble gum wrapper. Yes, they are too collectors items!)

11. It’s free! There’ll be no PayPaling of any kind here on Blogdramedy. I want you to keep those pennies and treat yourself to something extra special from the Dollar Store this holiday season. Consider it my gift to you.

12. The best reason of all? You might find another writer whose writing makes you laugh (or cry) more than you do after reading your own work. Like that’s never happened. Ha!

I made the list and checked it twice. It’s up to you to decide if you want to do this the naughty way…or the nice.

Sign up by sending me a comment and include your blog or website address. I don’t need to say that we’ll be starting with a partridge and a pear tree, do I? Maybe I do. Start at the bottom and work your way up.

On the twelfth day of Christmas,
my true love sent to me
Twelve drummers drumming,
Eleven pipers piping,
Ten lords a-leaping,
Nine ladies dancing,
Eight maids a-milking,
Seven swans a-swimming,
Six geese a-laying,
Five golden rings,
Four calling birds,
Three French hens,
Two turtle doves,
And a partridge in a pear tree!

I know blog real estate is precious — maybe an aside post, a temporary page for the duration of the challenge or just cut & paste the gang at the bottom of each day’s post (just don’t cut yourself) — it’s a nice blog-friendly way to say Happy Holidays!

  1. OMG! A&W!!1!! I haven’t been to one of those in ages! They don’t have them down south where I live. I have an A&W root-beer mug that’s like one of my prized possessions!
    *ahem*
Anyway. Yes, your challenge intrigues me. Consider this my acceptance. But, you should know, Christmas is my least favorite holiday. So, my stories probably won’t be very “festive,” IYKWIM.

    • If you read the entire post then you’ll know that I’m very strict and will bode absolutely no insolence from the participants. *smirk* That being said, if your stories include a little blood and gore…then you are at least sticking to the traditional holiday color palette…lots of cheery red.

      Welcome!

    • Something tells me you’re just the tiniest bit excited about this one…I bet you already have your stocking hung by the chimney / wood stove / fireplace / fake wood fire DVD playing on your television screen…whatever, with care. :-)

      Ho-ho-ho…welcome!

    • You can write about whatever you want as long as you include the day’s words in your story. For example, on day four, four calling birds bitched and moaned about why no one ever called them back over the holidays. :-)

You are now so in! Welcome.

  2. great idea – I’m game. Will we be linking each post up or you’ll just list our blog’s top link?
So just to be sure I don’t stumble on the first one (of course I want someone to stumble on my post but well – you know), we write 12 words about the item of the day.
So “Ten Lords” don’t need to be leaping but better show up on Dec 10 – right?

Oh could I have a cold root beer brought to me by a roller skating girl instead?

    • Then I guess it’s game on! I’ll include all the participants links in each days post…from my end.

However, since it’s only for 12 days, it would be nice if everyone also included links to the others — I know blog real estate is precious — perhaps an aside post where you can list everyone or set up a temporary page. Or, just include them at the bottom of your daily post…cut & paste…just don’t snip yourself. :-)

I’ll add a little note to the BlogFestivus page with this suggestion. Thanks and welcome!

    • Oops…forgot to answer your other questions. The daily length of the story is 144 words on the item of the day. So yes, on day 10 it’s ten lords…it’s up to you if you want to make them leap. :-)

I’ll link you up and your frosty mug of root beer is in the mail.

    • I think the lead-in to the comment section says, “Don’t be shy. Start a conversation!” You win!

Welcome to the playground. Wear protective gear…it gets a bit rough around here sometimes.

  3. I’m going to have to give you a “Let me think about it…” for this very moment. Sounds like fun, entertaining and an excuse to write more than three post a week. BUT – I don’t want to make any empty promises (like saying I’m giving up donuts for the holidays) so I’ll think about it instead of saying a “I’m in!” for now.

    Awesome idea regardless!

  4. I’ve been looking to get back into writing and have picked up my tumblr again! I hope I can stick with this! Sounds like a great challenge. I really need writing back into my life. :)

  5. I could have sworn I just commented a while ago that I wanted to participate. Did my comment get sent to spam?

  6. Anyway here are my details…(again)
They call me the Bitter one and I would like to participate in this challenge.
Here is my link – becomingbitter.wordpress.com
I’m not the best writer in the world or the funniest, but I want to try anyway.

        • “And in the center ring…”

We are a bunch of evil elves…ourselves…as elves. Excuse me while I go dig out my shoes with the bells. Elves, selves, bells…I need more coffee. :-)

          • So, just to make sure… Dec 1 – 12, each day 1 post with 144 words short story. Each short story has to have the words from the song that you listed up there somewhere in their short story.
Question: We can use that Blogfestivus image right? Because I want to put it in my sidebar. Part me of wants to make a banner for this challenge too, but I’ll take it one step at a time.

            • You got it. Each day a 144-word story with that day’s word(s) somewhere in the story. For example, day one: a partridge and a pear tree. Day two: turtle doves. Day three: french hens, etc. etc. until the last day when you’ll have drummers.

Yes, please use the image. I think it’s a big enough resolution for you to use. Have fun! Let me know when you’ve got it up and I’ll come take a look.

  7. yeah, I think so, why not? I’ve been looking for both short writing exercises, and a reason to revive my blog. Consider me in.
p.s. accepting your invitation via Chime.in

    • I considered. You’re in. :-)

Thanks for joining and I’m really starting to like the chime.in experience. I think there’s a blog post here but it will have to wait until I can take a breath from NaNoWriMo. *banging head on keyboard*

  8. Oops I left out the website part, excitement to write got the better of me. wordsthatrhymewithpurple.wordpress.com

  9. This sounds fun. Now that I’ve waited until (almost) the last minute, please sign me up!
    (randomsays.com)

Oh, and did I miss the part where you specified the dire consequences of writing more (or fewer) than 144 words? (Just want to know what I’m getting myself into.)

    • Whoa…close. You almost missed the buzzer.

The challenge is writing 12 short stories of 144 words each. I know…it’s a challenge! But I guess that’s why it’s called a challenge. ;-)
