Why I love Fab. Why I hate Fab.

What with selling the boat and all, we have some cash…real cash in the form of bills and coins…stashed under our mattress. It’s not a lot of cash but it’s enough to help pay for some much needed renovations around our bungalow. Not only do we need to do an update…we need to shift those coins. I’m getting a backache.

See what I did there? Slipped in the news that our cottage is no longer called “the cottage.” It’s now officially “the bungalow.” It’s a tad premature as it still looks very much like your everyday cottage. If your everyday cottage is 900sf and has orange wood panelling everywhere, including the bathroom. And a wood stove that’s called a heatilator. Basically, it’s a big black metal box that takes up a quarter of the room but puts out an amazing amount of heat.

It all worked as a cottage but as our full-time home, the look is wearing on my nerves ever so slightly. So, we’re going for a midcentury modern look.

And there’s where Fab comes in. Fab is a website that sells stuff. On sale. Amazing stuff. All online. The sales last for a certain number of hours then…poof. Gone. If you time it right, you can get some fabulous pieces for cheap(er). Sadly, my timing needs a little work. I’ve yet to buy anything but I keep going back to look at the pretty pictures. For inspiration.

Like this:

Sleek and serene. Like me!

And, like this.

I can see me at this desk. With my feet up. Thinking.

But not like this:

All that is missing is the dead body.

This one needs to be relegated to Auntie Becky’s attic where she entertains older gentlemen callers and serves them arsenic-laced tea. On sale for $1800. Whaaat?!

I’ve seen this sofa in a crazy sunshine lemon and it’s kind of funky. And cheaper. Still. Not my taste. This is a definite FabWhoa!

Over the next few months the Mister and I will be working hard to turn our cottage into a midcentury modern ranch-style dwelling. I’ll try not to bore you with details and pictures of things that make your wallet groan. Just the occasional FabWow! to make your mouth water.

Of course, I’m being presumptuous. You may not like my taste in furnishings…as impossible as that sounds.

So that begs the question:

What’s your design style? What do you love? What do you hate? I’m all ears. Sleek ears.

  1. I hope you share real pictures of your now cottage and soon-to-be bungalow.
While out of town, I did not get my daily Fab fix. Rest assured, I access it daily now that I am back in town. I wait for the 11:00 ET update and BAM! I window shop without getting off my butt.
I’ve bought many things – though all items were $50 or less. We do not have a boat, which we did not sell; so, we do not have bills and coins under any mattresses here. *sigh*

    • Then you might want to read my other blog. I’ll DM you the site. It’s more for friends and family and doesn’t get any attention from the blog-o-sphere. Which I like. So keep it quiet. Keep it safe. :-)

  2. I love a lot of styles. Our home is French country, but I love a good modern that is not too cold and imagine owning a beach house someday with white furniture.

    • We have a rocky beach house with soon to be Puff Ball white walls and driftwood colored floors. Relaxed retro is the look I’m going for. Trying to come in under budget and so far it looks doable. I must blog about budgets and what to give up to get that $3800.00 wood stove from Norway. Eating? Vodka? :)

        • Remember we’re on a budget. It might have to be mani and pedi for one finger and one toe only. That sounds like a line from “Red October.” “One ping, Vasily. One ping only.”

          I’m a geek for sonar.

  3. My house is decorated “Walmart and Relatives” style. Practically everything I own was either put together by yours truly or owned by two or three people before me. Except my bedroom – I actually have “real furniture” in my bedroom. I love that furniture. But oddly enough, I really love a lot of the hand-me-down furniture, too!

    • Love refreshing and reusing. Did a lot of that in Scooter, our little guest camp. The Mister’s old bed from when he was ten and tons of quilts his family made. It’s darling. :)

  4. Nice. The trendy retro look is back ;)
Personally – I am all over the place. If I’d had my own place it probably look like a theme park of Interior. But I feel it’s better to settle on one thing and follow through with it and my case it would probably be a simplistic shabby chic.
PS I am kind of hoping the same thing as Lenore Diane, maybe one or other picture? *batting with eyelashes*

    • I like shabby chic in small doses. Too much of a less is more kind of gal. Plus I like neat. Doesn’t have to be clean…just neat. ;)

I will do a few posts on the reno here…just don’t want to bore people to death with detailed discussions of toilet seats!

I can always DM you the link to our home and reno blog. Or you can get
it from Lenore. I like to keep both my blogs worlds apart. :)

  5. style ? Does that term describe a disease which you inherit. Can you learn style? Certainly not from BS marketing material. I have not. But I like the table – wood is good.

  6. 900sf? My Toilet Room is bigger than that.

I think you and I have similar taste in computer desks. Function over form. It needs to hold the computer up. For 15 years mine was a banquet table. Oh how I loved that thing. Now it’s a piece of finished wood with feet. Slightly more decorative but the same basic theme. Much like that first picture from Fab.

If you ever need a place to put your feet up you know who to call. Bat signal it, yo. An ottoman stands at the ready.

    • Yes, we live in a small place but after our boat, it’s spacious. But getting more cramped every day. Especially with drywall stacked against the walls. We’re doing the reno in stages and going to live on site during. That should be oodles of fun. :-)

Thanks for the offer of an ottoman. Does he look anything like Karl Urban? *snicker*

  7. I love mid-century modern style. My grandma had some cool vintage stuff in her condo that my sister and I are going to get. I like the clean lines of the furniture. I also like kitchy, quirky stuff. And bright colors. My style is kind of schitzo, actually. I have an old boat propeller as a decoration as well as a paint by numbers picture of spaceships that my sister made for me. So, yeah. You should never ask me for decorating advice.

    • Excuse me but…I should definitely get your take on decorating. Boat propeller as wall art rocks. I wish I’d remembered to take ours off the boat. I saw a light at Home Depot last Saturday in the shape of an airplane. For a boy’s room I suppose but I would love to hang it in our kitchen. The Mister says it would not provide enough light over the island. I say style over substance. :-)
