Today, I have no standards. Today, I’m an aside.

Not to overstate the obvious, but I like change. You know that…you’ve seen me change my WordPress theme often enough.

Well, this morning I found myself clicking on that damn Appearance button again and noticed there’s a Twenty Twelve theme. I use Twenty Eleven so imagine me jumping for joy to learn I could be…current!

Unfortunately, I don’t like the layout or options for Twenty Twelve. So, disappointingly, I won’t be changing my theme. But, to spice things up, I’m posting today in an “aside” format…not my usual “standard” format. Aside posts should be only one paragraph but next to change, the thing I like best is being contrary.

Can you tell the difference? I can’t tell the difference.

What theme do you use and why?

  1. I just spotted the difference. No title. And I had a really good title, too.

“Today, I have no standards, Today, I’m an aside.”

So, by the looks of things, I’m an aside for today only. Like a one-day sale. :)

  2. Since you’ve asked,, I’m known to change my theme frequently and I usually try out the new themes that look interesting, but I tend to go back to Twenty Ten or my current Inuit Types. Now I have the custom upgrade, so I can play within these with colors and fonts.

Yesterday at someone else’s suggestion, I played with changing my gravatar again, but I decided against it . . . for now.

I understand frequent change can be annoying to some, not to mention a faux pas. If my blog were a commercial endeavor or I were trying to establish a brand, the frequent changing wouldn’t be good. But it’s not. It’s just a place where I let a side of me play that doesn’t get out to play all that often.

If I can change my outfit or my nail polish or my hairstyle to fit how I’m feeling, why not change my blog around? As you well know, it’s less expensive than home renovation. It’s also faster and easier than toning my upper arms or growing my hair out.

All this to say, go on with yo’ bad self. Your spirit will shine through and all your changes are stylish.

    • I did notice you’ve made some changes to your blog. Very nice. :)

I find I’m on that dratted Theme page a few times a month. Eventually, I’ll settle on one…until the next one. Plus, as you said, it’s a cheap thrill.

And thanks for the nice words about spirit and shine and stylish. All s-words I can live by. :)

    • You see the title? Yeah…on my screen it’s AWOL.

Can’t wait for you to change your theme…not that I don’t like what you have going on but it’s like a hairstyle…no old ladies bob for you! :) And if you don’t like you can always go back.

  3. I picked my theme very early on and then customized it until I was moderately happy with it, though I’m still tweaking my widgets (sounds dirtier than it actually is). I’d think about changing themes, but I don’t want to put anyone off and lose a follower.

  4. I’m with you and Hipster. I’m often looking for the “perfect” theme. In fact, I created a “dummy” copy of my blog so I could change themes willy-nilly without anyone becoming dizzy or disoriented.

Right now I’m using a theme that offers a lot of customization because I figure no theme will be perfect out of the box. Unfortunately, that still leaves me with a lot of customizing and tweaking to do. (Yes, that includes tweaking widgets.)

I’ve been reading up on HTML and CSS, trying to learn the under-the-hood parts of WordPress and I’ve even getting an overview of PHP. (Hey, I’m a reformed engineer, so I’m used to acronyms, like SNAFU and FUBAR, both useful in reference to my theme tweakage and blog in general.)

Whatever, it helps to know I’m not alone in this. And I agree with Hipster that, no matter what you do with your theme, “Your spirit will shine through.”

    • FUBAR. One of my all time faves. I use it weekly. :)

I used to know some HTLM so maybe
I’ll give it a try next time I have the urge. And a dummy site…what a neat idea. Is that anything like a dummy corporation.? ;)

      • FUBAR is a good one. I’m surprised how many people don’t know what it stands for.

By the way, the post title does show up for me, but only if I view the single post on its own page. When I go to your home page, then the title disappears and it just says “Aside” at the top.

I’m not sure how a person would get to the single post view without a title to link to it. But, since I got to it from my RSS reader, the single view was just where I landed.

          • SSDD. Nice.

I’m not sure, but I think the post types may or may not differ depending on the theme. But as far as I can tell, you’re right. The missing title link is the only difference I see.

            • While I really like this theme, I don’t like that my individual posts don’t show my sidebar. I can add the sidebar to my pages but not my posts. It’s a head scratcher.

              • I did some searching and see that Twenty Eleven is indeed designed to have no sidebar on the single post pages. Weird that they chose to do that.

                • I’m sure I’d find the perfect theme if I was willing to pay for one of their premium themes. But I guess they haven’t read my post about buying a shower head. Otherwise they’d send me a coupon. :)

  5. Are wordpress bloggers more into themes than other bloggers? I’ve created new blogs more often than I’ve changed themes. Of course new blogs are hard to keep going with the old ones still requiring time. It gets hard to water all the blogs in the house.

  6. I started with Twenty Ten, and I really like that one, but then I found one I Really loved. But I had to pay for it. But I lurv it, so that’s okay. I get to change my little slideshow of featured blogs, so that’s nice, and I’m always changing my widgets, moving them around and whatnot. I like to be in my little grove, but with options to mess with the small stuff. I’m not particularly adventurous, methinks :)
