Hal David has passed away. Hal, and his music writing partner Burt Bacharach, scored some big tunes that you still hear playing on the radio today.
My parents were big fans and I first learned to dance on the toes of my Dad’s feet to songs like, “Walk On By” and “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head.”
When they got together with Dionne Warwick, they made beautiful music together. I think my favorite song of theirs is “I Say a Little Prayer.”
As an atheist, the song “You’ll Never Get to Heaven” really shouldn’t be part of my repertoire but I sing it nonetheless.
I think Hal would understand. His lyrics say it all.
“Raindrops keep fallin’ on my head. But that doesn’t …mmmmmmmmmmmm will soon be turning red. Crying’s not for me. No. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I’m not great with certain lyrics.
That’s okay. I’ll give you a passing grade for effort.
RIP to the creator of some awesome music. As an atheist you can sing that song all you want. It won’t change the fact that you’ll never get to heaven.
Hey! The song “Walk On By” was featured on my blog once, methinks!
Personally I love nothing more than belting out a few verses of “Onward Christian Soldiers,” or, when I’m in a more pensive mood, “God of Wonders” by Third Day/Caedmon’s Call. Of course, sometimes I take liberties with the lyrics.
Yeah…I can see you pensive. It’s a good look for you.
Looks like many good ones decided to pass on to a new existence. Didn’t know the composer but surely know and love the songs!
Can you imagine the jam sessions taking place in heaven? I like to think of it as some smokey bar with dim lighting where the bartender knows your name (God) and everyone dresses in cocktail wear.
Did you happen to catch the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song at the White House for Burt and him? You can find the clips at the White House youtube channel.
I mentioned and embedded a clip from it in a post.

Hey…thanks! I don’t have cable and am on a satellite for Internet access so I rarely get the chance to spend time watching television.
It took me years to appreciate the simple joy of “Raindrops” on its own merit, and not as the “what the hell’s going on here?” moment in Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid.
Hee-hee. I see what you mean.
I’m always slightly envious when I read about people who grew up in homes where the parents listened to “normal” music. I’ll explain sometime.
I had “Walk On By” playing in my head all day.
Music was about the only thing normal.
I’ll explain sometime…maybe we should do a blog swap…
Gosh, that’s a bummer. I wish I would stop finding out who people are the day after they die. Now I’m depressed.
At least now you know. Hum one of his tunes and you’ll feel better.
I’m humming Raindrops are Falling on My Head right now. But they’re not. So, I’m depressed that he’s dead and that there aren’t any raindrops. Thanks.
Into each life a little rain must fall. Wait for it.
Reblogged this on Inkings and Inklings and commented:
Part of my childhood soundtrack, it’s sad to hear of Hal David’s passing.
Thank you for sharing. One of the best lyricists of all time.
